Renovating a Kitchen on a Budget

Renovating a Kitchen on a Budget

Whether it’s to cook, dine with family or hosting a social gathering, most of us spend a lot of time in the kitchen. If you are thinking about remodeling the kitchen, chances are it is well worth the time and effort.

If you plan on staying in your home for a while after your renovation is finished, you should expect to spend between 5 and 15 percent of your home’s total value. This is what would be expected to get back during a home’s resale. You should also splurge on items such as countertops and cabinets. If you are planning to sell your home, having a newly renovated kitchen has the potential to boost your home’s value and there are plenty of ways to save on labor and materials.

Saving on Materials

The average cost of a kitchen remodel in the United States is $21,751.00. Most of that money goes towards cabinets and hardware. The best thing you could do is keep what you can, or find furniture in different rooms of your home and re-purpose them in your kitchen. You can also buy cabinets from your local Habitat Restore.

Habitat for Humanity has home improvement stores and donation centers called ReStores across the United States that sell new and gently used furniture, appliances, building materials and much more! This is offered to the public at a fraction of the retail price. All proceeds support Habitat for Humanity’s mission to make sure everyone in the world has a decent place to live. Paying for Labor vs. DIY

When remolding, a lot of money goes into labor for plumbers, electricians and carpenters. Doing the work yourself can help you save tons of money, but make sure it is a job within your abilities otherwise the price can quickly escalate. Research the project to understand what is involved. Decide if this is a project you could take on yourself and if not, make sure the contractor you hire is reliable. Get multiple quotes from different contractors before making your final decision as well as getting references or finding online reviews.

Bonus: A project you can take on yourself is the demolition of the kitchen. Take sledgehammer to your old cabinets! Also can be a useful way to reduce stress!

Final Thoughts

The most important thing you should take from this is when renovating on a budget, give yourself plenty of time. Whether its a few weeks or months, make sure you have a clear idea for your renovation. That means doing plenty of research and viewing many different design ideas. Having a set plan will help you avoid any project changes, when half way through the renovation process, that can cause you to go over your budget.
